Bugging Out

I recently got my hands on a tub of ladybugs and I am elated! As an avid gardener with five gorgeous rose bushes in my yard, I have great respect for the ladybug. They are some what of a personal hero for me. Yes, I hate aphids that much.

Aphids are those tiny little bugs that perch on the new growth and buds of your roses. They will destroy the blossoms if left alone. Fortunately a ladybugs favorite snack is an aphid, hence my love for them.

Not only are ladybugs a great chemical free way to control pests in your yard, but they can also be quite cost effective. Because ladybugs do not fly when the temperature is below 55 degrees F, it is best to release them at night. If they are able to find a food source they will lay eggs in a matter of days on the underside of your foliage.

During the larval stage ladybugs are not nearly as cute, but never fear, they will still eat those pesky aphids. After about a month you will notice the little critters have entered the pupa stage, this is the same thing that a caterpillar does to become a butterfly. After a week you have more ladybugs! Since one female can lay 1000 eggs in her lifetime, you are looking at years of aphid free happiness from just one tub.

Worried about your ladybugs going to the birds? Don't be, ladybugs emit a chemical that birds can not stand. They will be much obliged to stay away.

Coupon Crazy

Just six short months ago I wouldn't have recognized a coupon if it landed on me. Grocery budget, what's that? In fact, it was purely out of curiosity and desire to know what a 'normal' grocery budget should be, that I stumbled across The Grocery Game that fateful day.

The Grocery Game is a website that was founded in 2000 by Teri Gault out of a passion for saving money, on what is for most families, the seconded largest monthly bill. Teri has best been described as a broker for grocery deals. By subscribing to her site you will have inside information on which deals to grab and which to pass on. How do they know? Years of tracking and analyzing pricing trends on thousands of products in stores all over the country.

Since first starting the Grocery Game I have managed reduce my grocery expenses by half. This is quiet a feat considering I am bringing home double the amount of products I would have in the past.

There are many misconceptions about shopping with coupons. Namely, that one must eat boxed goods in order to use coupons effectively. Not true! You do not need to change what you buy, just when you buy it. Even with my savings, I still manage to stay true to my brand snob ways. Lets face it somethings, like peanut butter or toilet paper, are just not negotiable.

The other huge benefits is that now I typically only need to go to the store once a week, as opposed to the daily errand it used to be. Our house has become mini convenience store. I'm fairly sure we will never run out of deodorant again, a very reassuring feeling.

The other beautiful thing about the Grocery Game is that you can make you can make it as easy or as involved as you want. The bottom line is, you are saving money and who isn't down with that?

Bag a Book

Or a bag and a book!
Monday I had mentioned the great coupons available for Borders this week. Well I got to use some of them last night! Check it out!

The tote, originally $12.99, cost only $2.99 after coupon. That is 77% off! It is a thick canvas that will last quite a while. The cookbook, which I've coveted for some time, is by the author of my favorite magazine, Cook's Illustrated. I'm elated to have picked up it up in the sturdy hard back edition for only $25 after coupon. This book will see a lot of counter time in my kitchen. I also used the Free 12 oz Latte coupon for a $3 savings, bringing my overall savings to 45%.

Throwing eggs

Maybe just the shells in this case. If you do any gardening you NEED to be saving your eggshells. Yes, rinse them...please. There are so many uses for them outdoors.
The easiest way, toss them into your compost.
The tedious way, grind them into a fine powder and use as a fertilizer.
My way, crush them in your gloved hand and scatter them at the base of you tender perennials.
You know, the ones that slugs, caterpillar and earwigs love to noch on. The eggshells offers a safe, natural and free defense to you pretty plants. As these pest crawl towards yours lovely flowers to fill their bellies, they will be cut by the shells.

Bug murder. Mwaaahahaha!
As you can tell from the photo, the shell blend right in.

Time for Change

I love Coinstar! There, I said it. Why? ...because I hate change, literally. It's heavy, dirty, germ ridden and inconvenient.
Until they outlaw it or melt it into something useful, what do you do? Roll it, no thanks. Me? As soon as my purse feels a little heavy from that loose change I stop by one of those green machines and load up my Starbucks card.
For no fee Coinstar will count your change and load it on one of their affiliates gift cards, including: Starbucks, Cabelas, iTunes and Lowe's just to name a few.
Not only does this keep me happy and sane by keeping me coin free, but it allows me to treat myself to an iced tea on Sunday morning during my weekly shopping trip. It's win-win...win...win. There are a lot of winners on this one!

Check here for a location near you.

the loot

Didn't need much this week, but I still managed to walk out of Safeway with a full cart. Stuck with my Grocery Game list again and got all of this for just $37.51 at a savings of 55%!

For an additional $17.78, I popped into Alberstons and picked up 1.5lb of chicken, a 2lb block of Tillamook, 2 bottles of Ken's Salad dressing and a jar of yeast. Well under budget this week!

Something about Sundays

I love my Sundays! This morning I wanted to use up the few remaining potatoes and half an onion that I did not use in last nights dinner.

That means home fries: Simply chop your potatoes and onions, remember that smaller cubes cook faster. Blanch the potatoes in salted water for about ten minutes or until tender. Drain thoroughly. Saute with butter, chopped onion. It's that easy.

Serve up with some cheesey scrambled eggs and morning star breakfast links. Don't forget the salsa, lets face it, everything is better with salsa.
